Growing up, I never paid much attention to my skin and skincare until I was in high school. I started to break out and would do anything for there to not be a bump on my face. I often times tried to pop my pimples (don’t do it!). I have some tips YOU need to follow to take care of your skin. I am by no means a dermatologist but I have read, learned, and experienced things you should not do to your skin.
- Pick it – This is a definite No no! Picking your skin (blemishes) causes damage and will cause scarring that will last far longer than a blemish. I wish someone would have told me this when I was a teenager (ok, my mom probably told me, but I didn’t listen). Now Iโm living with the acne scars! Iโm working hard to get rid of my previous scars, but without laser procedures, it will probably take a while. Instead of picking or popping your blemishes or blackheads, leave them alone! I like using this product by Kate Somerville. It’s an acne clearing lotion that I found doesn’t dry my skin out. Some acne products are so harsh, they make it worse. This one is my favorite I’ve found after years of using acne products. For blackheads, I love using Biore Pore Strips! They work great for my nose!
- Sleeping in Makeup- At night, our skin rejuvenated and heals itself. Our skin needs air! Makeup sitting on your skin all night makes it hard for your skin to breath and heal itself! If you want your skin and makeup to look good, you need to take it off! The easiest way to remove makeup, in my opinion, is makeup wipes! My favorite is the Simple brand wipes because they have limited ingredients and do not leave a residue on your skin. I still wash my face after using a makeup wipe. But using a makeup wipe at least is better than leaving your makeup on!
- NOT using a moisturizer– skin is fragile, you should be moisturizing it even if your skin is naturally oily! I myself used to have terribly oily skin, and I found that the more I moisturize, the less oily my skin is. Moisturizing your skin also prevents wrinkles. Some of my favorite moisturizers are Glow Recipe’s oil free watermelon moisturizer and Josie Maran Argan Oil, yes I use this on my face!
- Overwash/scrub it- when I was a teenager and had acne, I thought that I needed to wash my face more. But this actually causes irritation and inflammation! Of course, you should wash your face, but not more than 2 times a day (morning/night). Find a face wash that works for your skin type. I personally love Philosophy’s Purity face wash because it is so gentle yet effective.
- Tan (Indoor/Outdoor) – This one may be the hardest to do, most girls want a sun-kissed, tan, glowing skin. But you can achieve this without overly tanning your body! There are great self-tanners these days and makeup or bronzer for your face to achieve a tan! We canโt totally avoid the sun, and we shouldnโt! But we can prevent premature aging by using sunscreen and staying out of tanning beds. My favorite fake tanning product is by the brand Fake Bake, it’s so natural looking. My favorite bronzer is Hoola by Benefit, also very natural looking.
